A wall-mounted TV transforms a living room — but get it wrong and you are looking at a cracked screen, a damaged wall, or worse. Different wall types require very different approaches. Here is what you need to know.

Identify Your Wall Type First

Before you pick up a drill, tap the wall and listen. A hollow sound means plasterboard (stud wall). A solid thud means brick or concrete. Each requires different fixings, and using the wrong ones is how TVs fall.

Plasterboard Walls

Plasterboard alone cannot support the weight of a large TV. You must either fix into the timber studs behind the board (use a stud finder) or use specialist cavity wall anchors rated for the load. For TVs over 40 inches, always fix into studs — not just the board.

Brick and Concrete Walls

These are the most forgiving for TV mounting. Use a masonry drill bit and hammer setting, then insert rawl plugs before screwing in the bracket. The key mistake here is using plugs that are too small for the screw diameter.

Choosing the Right Bracket

Fixed brackets are the slimmest and most stable. Tilt brackets let you angle the screen down — useful for high mounting positions. Full-motion arms give the most flexibility but put the most stress on fixings. Always check the bracket's VESA compatibility and weight rating against your TV.

Cable Management

Leaving cables dangling is the one thing that ruins the look of a wall-mounted TV. Options include surface-run cable tidies, in-wall cable routing (requires an electrician if near a socket), or a recessed media plate. Plan this before you drill.

Height and Viewing Angle

The centre of the screen should sit at roughly eye level when seated — typically 100–110cm from the floor for most sofas. Mounting too high is one of the most common mistakes and leads to neck strain over time.
